Overview[]

The Oakland Fire Department (OFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Oakland, the largest city in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, located in Alameda County, northern California. Incorporated as a city on May 4, 1852 and named for the large oak forest that originally covered the area, Oakland encompasses an area covering 78.03 square miles, including the Port of Oakland, one of the busiest ports in the United States, and serves a population of approximately 440,646 inhabitants. Oakland is bordered by the City of Emeryville to the northwest; the City of Berkeley to the north; Contra Costa County to the northeast and east; the East Bay Regional Parks District and the City of Piedmont, which Oakland surrounds on all sides, to the east; Lake Chabot Regional Park to the southeast; the City of San Leandro to the south; and the San Francisco Bay and the City of Alameda to the west. The city is connected with the City of San Francisco via the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge.

Mutual Aid[]

The Oakland Fire Department is a signatory of the California Fire Service and Rescue Mutual Aid Plan[1] and, as a result, has mutual aid agreements with the Alameda County Fire Department, the Alameda Fire Department, the Berkeley Fire Department, the Piedmont Fire Department, the East Bay Regional Park District Fire Department, the San Francisco Fire Department, and the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

Department Profile[]

The Oakland Fire Department is budgeted for 420 full-time personnel, including civilian support staff and responds to approximately 62,729 calls for service annually, with over 80% of those being medical calls for service. OFD provides aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) for Oakland International Airport through the Port of Oakland which owns and operates the airport. Oakland Fire Department operates from 25 fire stations. OFD does not provide EMS and ambulance transport services as part of its mandate. All EMS and transport is provided under contract by Falck Mobile Health (formerly Care Ambulance Service)

The Oakland Fire Department is the sponsoring agency of California Task Force 4 (CA-TF4).

History[]

The Oakland Fire Department was started in the 1860s as a volunteer fire department and was officially formed on March 13, 1869, when its first fire station was built. In 1908 the department bought their first motorized fire engine and by the early 1920s, the fire department was fully motorized. The Oakland Fire Department has maintained an ISO Class 1 rating since January 2022 thereby being one of 42 Class 1 agencies in the State of California.
