Idaho Falls Fire Department

Area Served

The Idaho Falls Fire Department provides fire and ALS medical service to a population of 108,000 in the city of Idaho Falls and the Bonneville County Fire Protection District. EMS is provided to a further 10,000 in Jefferson and Bingham counties. IFFD forms IAFF Local 1565.

History

A volunteer fire department was formed in 1885 following a fire in the city, which was then Eagle Rock. The city received its first horse-drawn apparatus and paid driver in 1907, a career chief in 1909 and its first motorized apparatus, an American LaFrance, in 1916. The department expanded with the city, buying its first ladder truck in 1930. In 1966, the city began providing fire protection to 390 square miles of the county. The IFFD provided ambulance service starting in 1970, trained EMTs from 1971 and paramedics from 1973. ARFF capability was added in 1975 and a hazmat team in 1992. The IFFD moved out of its longtime headquarters in 2017 and earned an ISO 2 rating the same year.
